Honeymoon Reviews

Never again!

06/02/2007   Let me begin by saying the entire staff was very pleasant the entire stay. Our problems were inexcusable, though. We stayed in a beachside villa and the morning after our arrival, I reached into my toiletry bag to have a giant cockroach crawl up my arm! When reported to housekeeping, I was told, 'It's a caribbean island and those things just happen.' We've stayed in many other caribbean islands and never had this happen. That was a poor and unacceptable excuse. On the third day there, we went for towels and were told the woman didn't come in that day and there wouldn't be towel service. Again, unacceptable. The beach and the adjacent pool was peaceful and very clean. I cannot say the same about the pool at the lobby. As you walked around the pool area to the bar, there were roaches walking around. They really need to exterminate better at this hotel. Besides the visit from the roach on our first day, we had other visits from others and ants as well. On the fifth day, our air conditioning unit broke down and we had to change rooms. Grrr. The foliage is very well kept and the iguana feeding is entertaining. The restaurants were very good, especially Havana Blue during sunset. What a view!

Bad experiences at Marriott St Thomas

05/13/2007   The pool area as well as the beachside room we were in had cockroaches and when mentioned to staff, we were told it is a tropical island and should be expected. Wrong answer! The garbage cans on the beach were not emptied every day, so they overflowed. They did not have towels for beach guests because the employee that cleaned them was not in that day. The staff was very pleasant, but did not have the responses we expected to hear. The rooms were clean and comfortable, the food was average, but the pest issue and lack of grounds maintenance is unacceptable.

On an island like that...who cares where you stay?

07/20/2006   St. Thomas is a great choice for your honeymoon in my opinion. I would recommend staying in the Morningstar section of the hotel, it's cozier and you're right on the beach. Coco Joe's is a good place to eat and they have awesome drinks...it's right on the beach, an open air place. We really loved eating there. Don't freak when you see the prices of the food because the portions are huge. For dinner if you decide to leave the resort property, we really enjoyed dinner at Room with a view, it's very romantic and a short drive/cab ride from the hotel. It's also at Blackbeard's castle so you can take in a bit of the island's history while you're there. I would go at night so you can truly take in the view...the lights at night are amazing. The Pueblo (or KMart) is also close to the hotel. Rum punch in the hotel lobby everyday! I would not recommend renting your own car unless you feel comfortable driving on the other side of the road, in the midst of say...crazy, impatient drivers. Going through town the traffic patterns are a little different so we were glad we took taxis. Yes, you must go to St. John...I would charter a boat with a guide and have him take you around and to some hot spots. At night, you can taxi to Duffy's or The Greenhouse...those are the hot nightspots apparently...we really enjoyed Duffy's. There is also a Duffy's at St. John. Check out Woody's at St. John also. There is shopping in St. Thomas and plenty of stuff to do. You can take a ferry to St. John, I'm not sure of the cost. The best beach for us was Morningstar. Magan's bay was pretty but a tourist trap ($14 to rent a raft!), it was really pretty boring...there were no waves, and lots of families with kids. We snorkeled at Coki Beach and that was pretty cool...remember if you snorkel there to go over by the reef, off the left side if you're facing the ocean. We saw some truly amazing underwater scenes there. I am not that strong of a swimmer so I got a life jacket to float with because it's a good ways out...not too far to swim but you get tired out there fast. At the Marriott there were families there but not many. The resort itself is pretty much dead at night...not too much going on there. The Marriott is definitely one of the better hotels on the island though. We would stay there again. If you are interested in shopping downtown St. Thomas has awesome shopping!
