Honeymoon Reviews
11/06/2006
Every moment of our Alaska cruise was spectacular. The staff at Princess was amazing and really made our honeymoon special with their honeymoon package and special attention they gave to us. We were able to plan all of our excursions before the cruise and it was extremely easy to make any changes once the cruise started. The recommendations from the Pricess staff were 100% correct and we enjoyed everything. This honeymoon exceeded our expectations on all levels... Comfort, romance, adventure, and certainly a lifetime of pictures and memories!

Our honeymoon was also a destination wedding for my step-brother. My husband and I were married June 17th, 2006. My step brother and his now wife were married June 24th, 2006. My husband and I decided to take our honeymoon at the same resort that my step-bro and his wife had booked their destination wedding so that we would be able to attend their wedding. My husband and I arrived on June 18th to Dreams Resort and Spa. We were greeted with champagne and a cold hand towel. This was the nicest part of our honeymoon. Side note: Before we left, I contacted the travel agent that had booked this trip for us as well as 30 or so guests for my step-bro wedding and let her know that this would be our honeymoon and could she tell me if resort does any kind of special extras for honeymooners. She explained that they usually have a bottle of champagne, fruit bowl and flowers on the bed upon our arrival. And, this was spectulation on her part, they might upgrade our room since it was our honeymoon. When we checked in we were asked if we wanted an upgrade. We declined the offer since it would cost us an additional $30 a night per person extra. (Later on in the story you'll understand why this was the smartest move we could have made.) We were told they did not have a room ready for us and if we wanted to have lunch on the beach the room would ready soon. After lunch we went back to the front desk and we were then taken to our room. Suffice to say at this point the $60 a night extra was looking pretty good. Our room was close to the beach, restuarant and construction. So close to the construction that they had constructed a plywood wall around the back half of the building. The plywood blocked the view of the construction but not the smell or noise. The hall itself of awful. There was stagnant water with mosquitoes, mold growing up the plywood as well as the building and the smell was pungent. Our room, I had hoped, would be spared of this smell since it was air-conditioned. Again, I was way too hopeful. The smell was worse in our room. Along with the odor, the sheets, comforters and towels were spotty. The bed was similar to sitting on a pool table. When we sat there was no bounce or give whatsoever. The air-conditioner did work but the cold air was tanted by odor. We proceeded back to the front desk to request a new room. We were told we would have to come back in the morning. We explained we would not be able to stay in this room, come back tomorrow was all we could get. (Not until much later during our stay that another couple that had won their trip, did the topic of champagne, fruit and flowers upon arrival had come up. We never recieved any of those things but the very nice couple we had met did get all of those things and it wasn't even their honeymoon.) We spent our first night on our honeymoon a little unnerved and a little worried for the some 30 people about to arrive. My husband awoke with a soar shoulder and I had woken several times in the night because my leg kept falling asleep. That morning we went straight to the front desk. It was about 9:30am. We were told they would get us another room but that it wouldn't be until after the new guests had arrived. We were told to pack our bags by noon and then come back to the front desk at 2pm or after and they would give us new room keys. At 3pm, and all day of not having any of our belongings, we got out new room. Much farther away (quarter of a mile from original room) also away from the construction but was next to entrance of hotel so all night and day we heard taxis, vans and tour buses coming up and down the cobblestone path. No, don't stop reading yet, it gets better. Our new room was better because the smell was gone and the bed was softer, albeit softer because it was older than my husband and I ( we are in our mid-30's) but the sheets, comforters and towel were still spotty. One other difference was the sign in our bathroom 'Do Not Drink The Water'. We figured this one out when we attempted to brush our teeth upon arrival in our new room. The water out of every tap in the place is brackish at best. It smells of sewer and salt water. This is what we showered in for 8 days. Tuesday was better. We shook off Sunday and Monday up to it being a 'one-off' deal and it was gonna get better! My family was on their way and my step-bro was getting married Saturday! How exciting! Tuesday evening most of party had arrived. Unfortunately, our experience was not a one-off. By late evening we heard stories of no air-conditioning, dirty toilets and bugs from doors that didn't seal when they were shut. Later on we found out that the upgraded rooms were in worse shape the garden views. Wednesday was the very end of our honeymoon. I woke up with stomach cramps that had me in a fetal postion most of the day. I was sick Wednesday. My husband was sick Thursday. My step-Father was sick on Friday and through all of this some 20 people in our party was sick at some point. We, sick people, stopped eating. Drank only bottled water. We were unable to leave the room due to a low grade fever, the weather didn't help condition and unable to pinpoint exact location of each bathroom on the resort. Thursday night we did leave our room to try and spend some time with family and friends. This is when we started hearing other stories. One couple had a water pipe burst in their room. My parents had no air-conditioning. Resort didn't have another room like their to offer so they placed them in smaller room, with out compensation from difference in price. Unfortunately, for my parents my step-Father became so sick the next day (Friday) they were fearful of moving to another room. Sidenote: My step-Father weighted 183 pounds when he arrived. When he got back on June 27th and went to the doctor he weighted 170 pounds. He was prescribed Cipro and bed rest. He was able to go back work on July 6th. By Saturday we were feeling somewhat better but we think it was a combination of gatorade (in the gift shop) and eating only toast once a day. It was Saturday now and we decided to do something(since we had done nothing but be sick in Mexico), so we got a kayak and oared out a little to see the sights. Fortunately, for us we were ok, but when we got back the guy in charge realized, when we couldn't pull the kayak on the beach, that there was a big leak and it was flooded with water. We left Sunday. We were both sad about being sick on our honeymoon and we were nervous about traveling back to the airport and then airplane ride home (bathroom don't have neon signs in Mexico). We decided to get a seat behind the bar to wait for the bus. As we sat there we watched the bartenders show up for their shift and get the bar ready to start serving. What we saw immediately alarmed us and something we hadn't noticed before. They took the glasses that were sitting atop the bar and start to rinse them out with tap water. The very same water that we were told not to drink but were forced use in the shower. At that point we realized that no matter what we drunk or ate, we and most of our party, we doomed to get sick. Neither my husband or I witnesses any kind of soap or cleanser. It seemed as though they rinse out the plastic glasses, wipe them with a towel and set them up to be used for the next cusotmer. When we got home we went to the doctor. We had to go on Cipro like my step-Father. Roughly a week passed before we felt like we were 100%. We found out afterwards that another wedding attendee actually got so sick that they had to go to the hospital upon their arrival home. There were some nice things about Dreams but due to being so ill on our honeymoon and witness to so many friends and family getting sick none of those things are worth mentioning. Our personal recommendation is to steer clear of this place. They couldn't pay us to go back there.
