Reasons to Travel to Antigua and Barbuda
- BeachesAntigua has a beach for every day of the year, some of which have a lot going on and others where you can find seclusion. These picturesque beaches are one of the main reasons to travel to Antigua and Barbuda. Dickenson Bay is a beautiful, resort-filled beach with a lot to do. For privacy, check out Johnson's Point and Turner's Beach both in the southwestern part of the Island. With both pink and white sands, as well as the protection by the coral reefs, Barbuda’s beaches are undeveloped and ideal for privacy and quiet.
- BoatingSince the arrival of the British navy, boating has been a center of leisure activity in Antigua, and the trade-winds make it ideal for sailing. Antigua honeymoon travel wouldn't be complete without an experience on a boat. Come during Sailing Week for a first-hand look at a premier sailing regatta, or participate in one of the many boating tours available on everything including yachts, sailboats, powerboats and catamarans.
- WatersportsThere are plenty of watersports to keep couples busy, including diving, snorkeling, kiteboarding, kayaking and windsurfing. Check out Dickenson Bay for many different water activities. Here newlyweds will find some of the world’s best scuba and snorkeling off beautiful sandy beaches, calm waters, abundant coral reefs, and large numbers of colorful tropical fish. Good sites include Cades Reef, Sunken rock, Dickenson Bay, Pineapple Beach. For more remote sites, try the waters off Prickly Pear Island. For more experienced divers, a short local air flight or 3.5-hour boat trip will take you to Barbuda Island, which is surrounded by many shipwrecks.
- HistoryAntigua has a rich history dating back to around 2400 B.C. Along with the first British settlements in the 18th century came the first sugar plantations. The island soon became covered with over a hundred windmills and plantations. Some of these are now home to shops and restaurants, while Betty’s Hope is restored for visitors. English Harbour, including the Nelson's Dockyard National Park, is also a great historical site well worth a visit.
- ClimateThe weather in Antigua and Barbuda stays fairly nice year-round. In winter, it is in the mid to upper 70’s and in summer, the mid to upper 80’s. Even though it is not entirely out of the hurricane belt, one rarely hits its shores. This great weather makes Antigua a perfect honeymoon destination anytime.
